Three Ladies Lunching
Acrylic on canvas · 35 × 25 in · 1983
Painted in 1983, Three Ladies Lunching depicts three women gathered in a moment of shared conversation and ease. Their bodies lean toward one another, gestures animated, as if mid-exchange. The figure on the right holds a teacup, reinforcing the domestic, social setting and anchoring the scene in everyday ritual.
Created during the artist’s high school years on Long Island, the work uses deconstructed cubist form to convey connection rather than tension. Fragmented planes and exaggerated features remain present, but here they serve expression and rhythm, allowing humor, warmth, and sociability to surface. Within the broader series, Three Ladies Lunching reflects an early exploration of psychological presence expressed through collective interaction rather than internal conflict.
