Montauk — Studio Reflection
Acrylic on canvas · 24 × 36 in · c. 1980s
This painting is a studio-based response to my earlier plein air works painted in Montauk. Rather than working directly on the beach, I returned to the memory of the place — the horizon, the weight of the sky, and the movement of water — allowing the image to loosen and shift.
Painted in acrylic with a more gestural, expressive approach, the composition echoes the Atlantic coastline without describing a specific location. The brushwork is broader and more intuitive, prioritizing atmosphere and rhythm over observation.
While I don’t recall the exact moment this piece was made, it belongs to the same period as my Montauk paintings from the 1980s — a time when landscape, memory, and presence were recurring themes in my work. This painting functions as an internal echo of those experiences rather than a direct record of place.
