Montauk Point — Atlantic Study
Acrylic on canvas · 24 × 36 in · c. 1985
Painted au plein air in Montauk during the mid-1980s, this acrylic work was created while staying at my family’s beach home. I set up on the quiet shore with the Atlantic Ocean just to my right, working directly from observation as clouds rolled in over the coastline.
The beach was mostly empty, though a few passersby stopped to watch as the painting took shape. Over several hours, I captured the muted movement of the ocean and the soft horizon on a warm, overcast day.
Montauk Point has always held a particular stillness for me. This painting reflects not only the landscape, but a deep sense of presence — a moment of attention and immersion that defined my experience of Montauk during that time. The work was painted for my sister, to whom it remains especially meaningful.
