MAGAZINE COLLAGE
Cut-and-paste collage · Long Island · c. 1983
Created during Linda Modica’s early years on Long Island, Magazine Collage is a hand-cut, paste-assembled work drawn from found magazine imagery. The piece reflects a young artist’s instinctive visual language—one shaped by popular culture, repetition, and surreal juxtaposition.
Figures, fragments, and objects collide in unexpected ways: glamour, performance, humor, and suggestion recur throughout the composition. Dislocated bodies, exaggerated gestures, and playful interruptions create a narrative that resists a single reading, inviting viewers to discover their own connections and themes within the image.
This work captures an early fascination with appropriation and composition—an unfiltered exploration of influence, curiosity, and visual rhythm that continues to inform Modica’s later practice.
